I am praying to God that all the people of the New Orleans area will be safe and that the physical destruction, while looking to be overwhelming, is less than the most dire predictions.
But I am also praying to some minor extent that people who claim to be my fellow Christians like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson can find it in their hearts to not blame the destruction of the hurricane on New Orleans's "Debauchery" and "Immorality," as represented on Bourbon Street and the surrounding French Quarter. They did it after September 11th and after hurricanes in Florida, and there's a part of me that would really be surprised if they didn't do it this time.
Let's hope that they actually act like Christians and not judge people or throw salt on people's wounds. I hope that they can actually be like Christ and try to bear witness to him through their compassion and service to those devasted by this tragedy, instead of blaming them and kicking them while they're down.
